Medical Diagnosis
What is ADHD?
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterised by persistent patterns of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity that interfere with daily functioning and development. This condition typically begins in childhood and can persist into adulthood. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5), published by the American Psychiatric Association, provides the following criteria for diagnosing ADHD:
Inattention: Difficulty sustaining attention in tasks or play activities, often making careless mistakes, having difficulty organising tasks and activities, being easily distracted, and often forgetting daily activities.
Hyperactivity: Excessive motor activity, such as fidgeting, tapping hands or feet, or being unable to stay seated, especially in situations where it is expected.
Impulsivity: Acting without much forethought or consideration of consequences, interrupting others, blurting out answers before questions have been completed, and having difficulty waiting for one's turn.
These symptoms must be present for at least six months, be more frequent or severe than what is typically observed in individuals of a comparable age and developmental level, and cause significant impairment in social, academic, or occupational functioning. Additionally, the symptoms must be present in multiple settings (e.g., home, school, work) for a diagnosis of ADHD to be made.
